Kaomun-Som tum


Ingredients : (for 6)
1 cup            Jasmine fragrant rice
2 tbsp.            Glutinous rice
1 tsp.            Salt
2 tbsp.             Sugar
2 cups            Coconut milk
4-5            Pandanus leaves (Bai taey)

Ingredients for Som tum
1            Raw papaya
1/4 cup            Shrimp powder
3 tbsp.            Palm sugar
4 tbsp.            Fish sauce
2 tbsp.            FLemon juice
2 tbsp.            Thick tamarind water
2 tbsp.             Coarsely grounded peanut
1             Dried chili pepper
1             Lemon
3 colves             Garlic
Other ingredients such as fried sweetened dried beef, and vegetables as liked.


1.          Mix 2 kinds of rice together, wash for one time, drained through sieve and put into rice cooker with coconut milk, sugar and salt. When the rice is cooked cover with pandanus leaves.

2.          Peel papaya, wash and shredded.

3.           Crush garlic and chili pepper with pestle in the mortar, add sugar, fish sauce, lemon juice and tamarind water. Melt sugar in the mixture with pestle then add shredded papaya. Add 2 tbsp. of shrimp powder to the ingredients and mix thoroughly. Put Som Tum on serving plate, sprinkle with the rest of shrimp powder, cubes of lemon and grounded peanut. Serve with fried sweetened dried beef, lettuce, string bean or other vegetables as liked
